Year 2 Transition (2020-2021)
Getting Ready for Year 2
Hello year 1 children, soon to be year 2 children. We hope you are all very well and excited to be coming back to school in September. We can't wait to see you. Below you will find a video from us all, some photos of all of your new teachers, with a little bit of information about each of us and some information for you and your parents that you might find useful.
Welcome to Year 2
Life in year 2 is full of fun learning, great times and lots of laughter. We all follow the school’s Code of Conduct of Mutual Respect, Honesty, Safety and Achievement. We all help each other to persevere and work collaboratively.

Everyone in year 2 is encouraged to read every night at home and can choose books from our lovely Year 2 library in school. We have a great selection of books, from Collins Big Cat, which develops reading over 18 levels from pink to pearl. We are always around to help children choose a new book, discuss that book with them and listen to what they liked best about their reading book.
The Balksbury Federation has updated our uniform dress code policy on the website. Click on the logo below to view the uniform.
Please remember to name EVERYTHING!
We have PE twice a week, both out door sessions. Our PE kit is a red or white T-shirt and black shorts. Children can wear a warm tracksuit for the winter as we will still go out for PE lessons. They will need trainers or plimsolls as these are essential for outdoor PE lessons. Don’t forget to have a spare pair of socks in your PE bag if your child is wearing tights to school. Remember earrings need to removed on the morning of a PE day or if your child can, then removed before a PE lesson. If your child has long hair they will need a hair bobble. On the first day back after the holiday your child will be told when it’s their PE day.
Art & DT
We do art or DT every week at the infants. Children will need to bring an old shirt or t-shirt to school to cover up their uniform for art lessons. These will be kept on the children’s pegs.
There is very little storage space at the infants so we ask that children DO NOT bring in a ruck sack, just a book bag.
As well as reading, we like to encourage children to learn their times tables. In year 2, they will learn 2, 5 and 10. To help with this we have the Rock stars times table website. There is also weekly homework which is set on a Wednesday and is due into school on the following Monday. This homework will be some maths arithmetic or number work and some English spelling work.
TRIPS, OPEN BOX AND TOPICS
We have a fantastic trip to The Historic Naval Dockyard booked for the spring term, where we will visit HMS Victory, to link to our topic all about The Battle of Trafalgar. Open Box Theatre Company will visit year 2 in June to enhance our learning all about The Great Fire of London.
In the infants a healthy snack is provided for the children, so they do not need to bring anything from home.
Your child should bring a named water bottle containing ONLY water to keep themselves hydrated during the school day.
Frequently asked questions
Will I be allowed to go to the toilet during class?
Yes of course you are but we may encourage you to see if you can wait if we are in the middle of something really important.
Will I be allowed to sit next to my friends?
During our settling in week we will spend time getting to know each other really well. You will be sitting with people you work well with. If you are not happy speak to your teacher and we will work hard together to find a solution.
Who can I speak to if I am worried about something?
Your emotional wellbeing is very important to us so you can talk to any adult in the school with whom you feel comfortable. If this is hard remember you can write a message and put it into the box at reception.
Do I have to do my homework?
We have a home school agreement and it is very important that you work independently to improve your work.
Can we bring a pencil case?
No we will provide you with all you need.
I am worried about not seeing my friends and being in a class with different people.
You will be working with different people within the class and year group. As we are a year group bubble, only our year group will be out on the playground at one time during the autumn term. This will make it really easy to find your friends and make new ones. If you have any problems you must speak to a grown up because we can help you find a solution.
