Transition

A big hello from The Year One Team! On this page you will find all the information you need regarding the transition from Year R into Year One. We are so excited to see you all in September for fantastic learning and fun!

Please click the picture below to see a video from The Year One Team for September.

WELCOME TO YEAR 1

Please see below all the information you will need to be ready for September.

What to bring to school each day

Each day children should bring in their book bag with their reading record inside. Unfortunately, we do not have room to store rucksacks, please do not send these in. They should bring a coat in the event of wet weather and are welcome to leave wellie boots at school to be used for outdoor learning.

Healthy Snacks

Fruit is provided by the school each day, so there is no need to send in a snack for your child.

Water Bottles

Please provide a water bottle for your child to bring to school each day. We encourage children to drink regularly throughout the day to stay hydrated and healthy. Please ensure you do not put juice in the bottles and just fill them with water.

Reading

Everyone in Year One is encouraged to read every night at home. By reading each night children develop confidence in segmenting and blending new words, learn new language, and develop a love for reading.

Children will have one book to read for pleasure which is changed each morning at school. They will also have a book which is read with an adult at school. This book will be changed once adults have pre-taught unfamiliar sounds, discussed the book with the child, and read it aloud.

We have a great selection of books, from Collins Big Cat, which develops reading over 18 levels from pink to pearl.

Uniform

Plain white polo shirts

Grey trousers or grey school style shorts

Grey skirt/dress or grey trousers

White/grey socks

Red or grey tights, or white socks

Red logo sweatshirts or logo cardigan

Red gingham summer dresses

Sensible plain black shoes

Please remember to name EVERYTHING!

PE

We have PE twice a week. Our PE kit is a red or white T-shirt and black shorts. You can wear a warm tracksuit for the winter as we will still go out for PE lessons. Trainers or plimsolls are essential for outdoor PE lessons. P.E Kits are sent home every two weeks to be washed, and need to be returned to school ready for Monday.

Art & DT

There will be lots of exciting opportunities for Art and DT in year one.

Bring an old shirt or t-shirt to school to cover up your uniform for art lessons.

Homework

In Year One we set weekly homework which is set on a Wednesday and is due into school on the following Monday. Each week there will be a simple tasks set for maths and phonics. There will also be a set of spellings given out which children need to learn for the following week. The spellings will consist of words which contain graphemes children are learning in phonics that week or “tricky words” from the phase being taught in class.

Open Box and Trips

We are lucky enough to have Open Box Theatre Company visit the children once a year to enhance learning through drama! The children have the opportunity to “go back in time” in the second half of the autumn term this year, to learn about childhood through the years. The children always really enjoy this experience and have lots of fun.

We are also planning a trip to a castle as part of our castles topic in the summer term. Details of this trip will follow soon.

Toilets

There are two sets of toilets in year one. One set is used by children in Heron Class and is to the side of their classroom. There is also another set in Tawny class which is shared by children in Robins too.

Hopefully most of your questions can be answered in the above information. If you still have questions about September, please do not hesitate to contact the school. We are always happy to help.
